Artificial Intelligence in Bavaria: Research, Transfer, and Growth

Bavaria is a leading center for Artificial Intelligence in Europe with a diverse and dynamic scientific landscape. Led by the two Munich-based Excellence universities LMU and TUM form Bavaria's university and college network, which is strong both in scientific depth and breadth - supported by institutions such as Helmholtz Munich, the Fraunhofer Institutes AISEC, IIS, and IKS, the DLR Institute for Robotics and Mechatronics in Oberpfaffenhofen, and the Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML), as well as by powerful infrastructures like the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) in Garching and the High-Performance Computing Centre of FAU in Erlangen.

Bavaria produces over 1,500 AI publications annually and offers more than 10,000 places in relevant degree programs. The Bavarian High-Tech Agenda has created over 130 new AI professorships – specifically in key areas such as machine learning, computer vision, and robotics. Munich is one of the world's leading locations for robotics in international AI and CS rankings. These top positions underscore the extraordinary density of talent, research, and innovative companies in the Free State.

International collaborations with leading research institutions worldwide foster knowledge exchange and drive the innovative strength of BAIOSPHERE. Key initiatives include the Bavarian Blue Swan Gigafactory Application, the Bavarian AI Foundation Model Initiative, the Bavarian Cloud for Health Research, and the cooperation between BAIOSPHERE and the Speinshart Scientific Center for AI and SuperTech (SSC). Together, these efforts further strengthen Bavaria’s scientific landscape and help establish it as an international hub for cutting-edge research.

Bavaria actively shapes the future of Artificial Intelligence and positions itself as a European leading ecosystem for innovative technologies and scientific excellence.
